I'm looking for good, original, tightly and well written fantasy and military sci-fi that moves at pretty good clip, and that has believable and correct world-building however, there are a few things I'd like to go over.

I guess that's all, but if you think of something don't hesitate to shout out.

Okay, so this is rather non-serious and whatever, but I thought you guys might find it amusing/relevant?

I had a dream last night. A PROPHETIC DREAM. (Well not really, but one of my friends thinks it is.)
I was talking to Christopher Paolini in the parking lot of my school and he was going on and on about this part he had planned where Galbatorix was to become GALBOZOR and Shruikan becomes SHRUIZOR. Meaning they become REALLY BIG. Meanwhile, in the background, GALBOZOR and SHRUIZOR were crashing around in the parking lot and I was all "Goodness, what a stupid idea, Pao-lee-nee"

I think the best part is that it's not too far off from something he'd do. Galby using his magic to become a giant...hmmm.
In other news, Anti-Shur'tugal has clearly infected me.

*runs away from the oncoming tide of anger and hatred*

(Anybody else have dreams like this, by the way?)

Turning to photography as a creative outlet during a valiant fight with breast cancer at age 34, [info]renaissance10 survived and set up a photo contest to help raise funds for the Lavender Trust, a nonprofit that provides information and support to younger women with breast cancer. In the first two years, the competition brought in over £65,000 (that's $107,260.73 U.S.!), with entries from 130 countries last year. Renaissance10 recently joined LiveJournal to meet other passionate photographers and find supportive friends.

I remember...

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 9:02 PM
...back before I became an anti, back when Inheritance was all the hype, I still remember the first time I read Eldest. Sure, the prose was dense; yes, it was pretentious in places ("The songs of the dead are the lamentations of the living."); but what I noticed right off the bat, the two things Eldest had going for it, were that (a) we saw what happened to the people of Carvahall and (b) Eragon was crippled.

And so I ask you all out of curiosity, what was your defining headdesk moment in the books?

It's so nice to see how humble and friendly teenage "authors" are, isn't it? I'll go ahead and let this speak for itself:

I think she attempted to insult us, but one can never be too sure these days.

(Oh, and I figured I'd go ahead and say it: I'm the one who made the article for Maradonia on TV Tropes. And I just added this quote to the top. Heh.)

A Quick Note

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 7:43 AM
Just something I realised last night that I wanted to point out.

In Brisingr, Nasuada has the idea of using magic to make lace, a labour-intensive activity that required very little energy.

In Discworld, one of the positions at Unseen University is... Professor of Eldritch Lacemaking.

I know the chance of Paolini having copies this is very slim, but still. Just thought I'd point it out. (Also perhaps the idea that if Paolini had read The Science of Discworld, in which I first noticed the title, Inheritance might have been a very different book indeed).

That's all from me, and I hope everyone either : a) has a safe and happy holiday; or b) goes about their life in a pleasant manner. See you in the New Year. I'm hoping we get a drunken Newsletter update from Paolini. :D

Holiday debuggery

We know there were a few kinks with the holiday promotion. We've been working very hard to get them ironed out. If you have a paid/permanent account, keep on sending those coupons. Here's an update:

  • If you were unable to send out multiple coupons at a time, please perform a hard refresh, and you should be good to go.
  • If you redeemed a coupon to upgrade your account and the balance at checkout was $0 instead of $9.95 or $15, this means your upgrade did not go through (nor were you charged). We've straightened this out, so you can now apply your holiday coupon toward the purchase of an annual paid account.
  • If you tried to redeem a holiday coupon and had trouble using a gift certificate to cover the balance of an annual paid account, we identified the root problem. If this happened to you, you can now use your holiday coupon together with your gift certificate.
  • If the number of holiday coupons you have available suddenly goes up (instead of down), this might be due to recipients declining the coupons, at which point your pool of available coupons will be replenished and, therefore, increase.
  • If you need assistance with holiday coupons or pretty much anything else (well, LiveJournal related), please open a support request and we'll be more than happy to help!

Tweaks

  • There were some initial glitches displaying results on My Guests, but we've worked them out. We hope you'll check out who's been checking you out!
  • Some of you reported formatting issues using the Rich Text Editor (i.e., line breaks were being removed incorrectly). We've implemented a fix! Thanks so much for your patience.

Give a little extra!

We're pleased to report that we've already sold over 100 virtual red ribbons in honor of National AIDS Awareness month. Remember, for each charitable vgift you purchase for $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds to IAVI.org (the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) to fund the development of an HIV vaccine. Once again, we thank you for your generosity.

Celebrate with holiday vGifts!

Stop by the Virtual Gift Shop and share some holiday magic with your LiveJournal friends.
